We’ve enhanced our 2024 retreat based on feedback from our 2023 guests. This includes an additional night in Santa Margherita and a cooking class in a villa overlooking the Italian Riviera. The itinerary below represents what one group’s itinerary will look like. You may be in a group that does the same things in a different order.

Wednesday, May 1, 2024

Arrive in Milan and check in to the luxurious Hotel Principe di Savoia, a Dorchester Collection property. An early evening welcome reception will be held at the hotel so you can meet our team and your fellow bakers.

Thursday, May 2, 2024

Travel to the Piemonte for three nights, with accommodations at Castello di Guarene, a Relais & Chateau property. If you’ve ever dreamed of staying in a castle in Italy, your dream will come true. The castle dates back to the 18th century and was a summer residence for the Counts of Roero. After check-in, you will have the afternoon and evening on your own to get settled and acquainted with the property and surrounding area.

Friday, May 3, 2024

Bakers will depart the hotel for a hands-on culinary experience in Fernanda Giamello’s Alba kitchen, preparing lunch and baking traditional Piemontese items such as baci da dama, grissini, plin pasta, and biova bread.

Saturday, May 4, 2024

No visit to this area is complete without seeing the historic town of Alba and learning more about the hazelnuts, truffles, and wine that make this region so unique and a paradise for food lovers. Conclude the day with a four-course group dinner at Castello di Guarene.

Sunday, May 5, 2024

Depart the Piemonte for Liguria and the Italian Riviera. We’ll meet up with local author and food expert Enrica Monzani for a day of cooking and baking in a villa overlooking the sea. This special location is where Stanley Tucci filmed a scene for his show Searching for Italy. Here, we’ll get a tour of the olive groves, followed by an olive oil tasting. For lunch, we’ll prepare focaccia al formaggio, a focaccia that’s local to the area, and trofie pasta that’s served with Genovese pesto that we’ll make by hand. After a lovely lunch, we’ll check in to the majestic Grand Hotel Miramare in Santa Margherita Ligure.

Monday, May 6, 2024

Enjoy a free day on the Italian Riviera. Don’t worry, there’s plenty to do! Stroll into the town of Santa Margherita for gelato, take a short taxi ride to picturesque Portofino, take in the view with a walk between coastal towns, book a boat trip, or enjoy the pool and beach views from the hotel.

Tuesday, May 7, 2024

After a fabulous time on the coast, we’re off to the medieval town of Siena in Tuscany for three nights. Accommodations will be provided at the Grand Hotel Continental Siena, the town’s only five-star hotel that’s located in the walled city. After arrival, you are on your own to visit the Piazza del Campo, Duomo di Siena, and learn about the city’s 17 contradas and Palio di Siena horse race each summer.

Wednesday, May 8, 2024

Bakers will spend a day in Giulia Scarpaleggia’s home kitchen outside of Siena baking and preparing a Tuscan lunch to be served overlooking the region’s picturesque hillside. You’ll prepare local recipes such as biscotti, panforte, and pasta. This is our baking adaptation of Under the Tuscan Sun.

Thursday, May 9, 2024

A visit to two favorite places in Siena that we love! First, we will stop in Antica Drogheria Manganelli to learn about their panforte spice blends before proceeding to Panificio il Magnifico bakery to taste their famous Sienese specialties. For a farewell, we’ll enjoy an aperitivo toast to a fabulous trip and new baking friends in the hotel’s historic wine cellar.

Friday, May 10, 2024

Return to Milan for departures. If you’d like to extend your stay in Milan, rooms are available at Hotel Principe di Savoia for a cost of $625 per night. Bakers can also extend their time in Italy by departing directly from their retreat end point in the Piemonte or Siena.

What airport do I fly into to begin the retreat in Milan?

Milan is serviced by two airports, Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) and Milano Linate (LIN). Most flights from North America arrive at Malpensa, which is about an hour from the hotel. If your flight from the US connects in Europe, you might arrive at Linate. Linate is located about 30 minutes from the hotel.

Can I extend my stay at the hotels?

If you’d like to inquire about additional nights in Milan, please email events@bakefromscratch.com. The cost is $625 per night. Some guests like to book a room for the night before their arrival so it is ready after all-night flights from the US.

Is breakfast included?

Daily breakfast is included.

Are children able to attend this retreat?

All participants must be 18 years old or older to attend this baking retreat.

What should I plan to wear during baking classes and on the retreat?

For baking classes, activities, and travel, the dress is resort casual. Tennis shoes are recommended for standing in baking classes and walking on cobblestone streets. For the castle dinner, the dress code is dressy casual, with slacks/casual dresses recommended for women and pants/closed-toe shoes recommended for men. In Italy and around Europe, athletic wear is not frequently worn.

Are the baking classes hands-on?

Yes, all baking classes are hands-on.

If I book a double-occupancy package, will the hotel room have two beds?

Due to the uniqueness and European charm of the hotels, double-occupancy rooms do not have two beds. If you are traveling with a friend or adult child, you can request two sets of linens on one bed.

Is this retreat better suited for professionals or home bakers?

Our retreats are geared for passionate home bakers, but professionals are always welcome.

What will we be baking?

In Alba, we’ll learn how to prepare Piemontese items such as baci da dama, grissini, biova, and pasta. In Liguria, we’ll bake focaccia and prepare Genovese pesto by hand. In Tuscany, we’ll bake biscotti, panforte, pasta, and other local specialties.

Will we have any free time?

You will have some free time in each region to explore the areas on your own. We will equip you with our list of our favorite bakeries, restaurants, and activities.

I want to bring my travel companion, but they don’t want to participate in the baking classes. What can they do?

We offer a baking participant plus non-baking guest package for this very reason! This package allows you to bake and participate in all retreat activities while your travel companion explores the regions we will visit on their own. As a part of this package, hotel accommodations, daily breakfast, welcome wine reception, group dinner, Alba experience, Liguria olive oil tasting, Siena experience and aperitivo, and transportation to/from scheduled retreat activities is included for your non-baking companion.

To reserve your space, email events@bakefromscratch.com. You will be required to pay your deposit within 48 hours. Reservations will be taken in the order in which we receive emails.
